Blue Compass Demonstrates Their Commitment to Community Service Through A Corporate Give Back Day with Rebuilding Together Greater Des Moines

Volunteers from Blue Compass took the afternoon off from the office and got dirty outside at their Annual Corporate Give Back Day. This year, they requested to go back to Jack McGowan’s house, the same house they worked on last year.

Jack McGowan, WWII Veteran, has lived in his home on the south side of Des Moines Iowa for 50 years. Jack came to Rebuilding Together Greater Des Moines in 2015 shortly after losing his wife and his son. Right before losing them both to brain cancer, Jack and his son were doing construction work on their house. The loss was very difficult for Jack and he was unable to finish the work himself. In order to maintain the home, he needed help.

We were so touched by Jack’s story, we wanted to do as much as we could to help. This is the third year in a row Rebuilding Together Greater Des Moines has sent volunteers out to Jack’s home. Jack was selected in for the Sears Heroes at Home project, where veteran volunteers from the American Legion Post 663 worked to complete the majority of the unfinished projects him and his son had started together. Now, the work that volunteers complete at Jack’s is mostly light work, including yard work and cleaning out the gutters. Later in the year, Jack was a victim of a hit and run car accident that has affected his mobility. This year the volunteers from Blue Compass installed an exterior railing along the side of the house and made a walkway with lava rock so Jack can get from the back to the front safely.

We can’t say enough about the enthusiasm the team from Blue Compass brought on their corporate give back day. This group really knows how to make the most out of the team-building experience. Everyone was having fun while giving back to the community
